This role is responsible for building and maintaining Substrakt’s relationships in Canada and the United States. This includes profile and brand work, client and sector engagement, relationship and stakeholder management, and new business development.

The ideal candidate for this role would be excited by the potential of digital to help cultural organisations broaden and deepen their connection with audiences. They would be passionate about and deeply engaged in the cultural sector, and would understand the challenges of the sector in both Canada and the United States ideally through experience working in-house at a cultural organisation, or at a supplier to the sector. They are compassionate, organised, proactive and happy working autonomously.
The Head of Sector Engagement is responsible for growing Substrakt’s profile in their relevant ‘territory’ (e.g. North America, Europe) by cultivating appropriate contacts in the sector, authoring relevant content and being an active, authoritative and engaged part of the discourse around digital and the cultural sector.
You will also be responsible for proactively engaging with the cultural sector through formal and informal networks to ensure that we (Substrakt) understand the priorities and challenges of the sector.
This will include (this is not an exhaustive list); attending conferences and events (both virtual and in-person, when the time comes), being aware of the impact of state/provincial and federal support and involvement in the sector, being aware of – and having an opinion on – initiatives around digital in the sector, extending existing Substrakt initiatives (such as Digital Works) to respond appropriately to the specific context of the North American cultural sector.
You will be responsible for identifying, generating and cultivating new business opportunities and leading our response to new business opportunities in the United States and Canada.
You will oversee the client service for all Substrakt clients in North America, ensuring regular lines of communication are kept open in an ongoing and productive manner and that we are responding appropriately to the needs and challenges of the organisations we work with.
You will liaise with our Support Manager, Kelly on a regular basis to ensure that client priorities are communicated and understood. You will take part in both the regular, support-focused, conversations and the less frequent, more strategic conversations to ensure we are aware of and responding effectively to both short and longer term priorities and client expectations.
This role will require you to be proactive as you will be working autonomously much of the time, we will be relying on your sector understanding and will look for you to supply recommendations about who to work with, pricing, staffing and service offering.
Our expectation is that over the longer term we will grow the team in North America and you would be responsible for leading that process.
This role will report to the Managing Director and work closely with the Head of Strategy, Head of Client Services and Head of Project Delivery.
