Substrakt are looking for a talented software developer specialising in Ruby on Rails to join the team full-time. Development work will largely be focussed on exciting new and existing projects in the education and health sectors, although there’s scope to work in our other key sectors too. You’ll join a tight-knit team developers, building cloud-based web applications deployed via Heroku, DigitalOcean and Amazon Web Services.

We plan our projects without getting bogged down in management terminology, so you’ll get to write code straight away. However, we will expect you to have a clear handle on defining technical requirements and a keen eye for user-experience and user-interface.

We have an exciting opportunity to further our work in the health sector that you will help shape. Specifically focussed on helping improve access to general practice and developing innovative ways of providing primary care services, you will get to create things that make a real difference.

The existing education project is a web based platform that gives users access to video clips and other training content. It started two years ago, selling access to best practise teaching videos for schools. New growth is coming from white-labeling and licensing the application so organisations can host their own content on the platform.

The product is growing quickly and we are about to embark on a major overhaul and next round of development that you will be leading.

Experience with Ruby, Rails, Postgres and Git is a must, with a solid working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript very desirable. You should also be familiar with Vagrant, provisioning tools like Ansible, and continuous deployment via Heroku and AWS.

You should practice TDD and be comfortable using continuous integration tools as part of a deployment pipeline. Writing code with a test to back it up should come naturally to you.

You’ll be joining a passionate, committed and knowledgeable team of developers and UX designers in which everyone codes. We’re predominantly based in Birmingham, but we also have a growing office in London.

Working with Substrakt comes with some tip top benefits including an annual bonus, conference allowance, regular social events, hack days, pension, cycle scheme, childcare vouchers and more (

We are also committed to providing meaningful and ongoing career development opportunities. We value our staff and want to support their ambitions. You will be joining the company at an exciting time of real growth and opportunity.

Please contact Andy, Managing Director ( with details of your experience, a link to your portfolio and a link to some code that you’re proud of. Either send us a public git link (eg GitHub or BitBucket) or contact us and we can organise looking at a private repository. We promise we won’t share. (If you’re unable to show us an example of your code, we’ll set you a small technical task to test your coding prowess).

Also, include the answers to the following questions:
1. Explain what Strong Parameters is and what it protects against.
2. Name a Ruby runtime other than MRI and some of its advantages over MRI.
3. Tell us about a gem you use in every project. Why is it so brilliant?

Substrakt is an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from all suitably qualified people regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion, sexual orientation or age.

No agencies please.

Deadline for applications: Monday 7th March 2016
