Glenn Howells Architects

Glenn Howells Architects is an internationally renowned architectural practice.

With over 80 staff operating across two self-designed spaces in Birmingham and London, GHA are a sizeable organisation. That said, in a conversation early in the design process, it was raised that clients have often underestimated GHA’s size and capabilities, due, in the main, to their website. When said client had visited their studio, opinion changed.

Establishing Goals

Working closely with the in-house design team, copywriters and Glenn himself, we established two main drivers for the site: to demonstrate the gravitas of a body of work spanning over a quarter of a century, and to give a greater sense of what it is like to work with GHA – not just as a client, but also as potential member of the team.

Prior to the redesign, the GHA website sat firmly within the zeitgeist of architecture portfolio sites circa the last five years: constrained within a small fixed-width frame, housing small, cramped images and even smaller text.

We sought to open the site up to the extents of the browser, allowing large-format images to sing.

Building Blocks

We created a layout-builder for project pages, so the team can decide how best to lay out their portfolio based on the content they have available, as one would with print medium, rather than conforming to a rigid template. Careful consideration was taken to ensure any permutation of ‘building blocks’ achieved a tidy ensemble.
